The FabLab @ STPI ELITE Building, Gothapatna, Bhubaneswar is a unique Digital Fabrication Laboratory established by Software Technology Parks of India (STPI) in 2019 with funding by Government of India and Government of Odisha. The FabLab is equipped with computer-controlled machines and equipment for rapid prototyping of industrial products and low-volume on-demand manufacturing.It promotes Maker Culture by empowering individuals, DIY enthusiasts, Artisans and Startups to design and create items and devices to meet specific needs.
The Fab Lab offers the following facilities with its state-of-the-art equipment:
3D scanning is the process of analysing a real-world object to capture data about its shape and surface details to construct digital 3D models. The FabLab offers 3D scanning facility using Sense 3D Scanner.
3D printing, or additive manufacturing, is the construction of a three-dimensional object from a digital 3D model. The FabLab offers 3D printing facility using a variety of materials by using 3 different types of printers: Sindoh 3DWOX closed-box professional 3D printer, FormLabs 3D resin printer, and Stratasys high-end 3D printer.
Laser cutting is contactless cutting of complex shapes with high precision without tooling/machining. The FabLab has an Epilog Fusion M2 laser cutter which is a dual-source laser system that uses a CO2 source for engraving and cutting wood, plastics, glass, leather, paper products, etc. and a fibre laser source for marking and etching directly into metal and engineered plastic parts.
Moulding and casting
Moulding and casting involve manufacturing of objects by shaping a raw material in liquid form by using a fixed frame known as a mould. The FabLab offers moulding and casting facility.
CNC milling is a computer-controlled subtractive manufacturing process which employs rotating multi-point, multi-axis cutting tools to progressively remove material from the workpiece and produce a custom-designed part or product. The FabLab offers CNC milling facility using 2 different types of machines: a large CNC mill, ShopBot, that facilitates digital fabrication of wood, plastic, aluminium, etc. and a mini CNC mill, Roland SRM 20, that facilitates creation of realistic 3D prototypes using a wide range of materials, like modelling wax, foam, acrylic, ABS, PC board, etc.
Vinyl cutting involves precision-cutting of desired graphic designs from vinyl materials using a computer-controlled blade. The FabLab offers this facility with the help of a Roland DG GS-24 versatile digital cutter.
The FabLab has 2 types of power sawing tools for cutting and shaping wood or other hard materials: a Band saw with a continuous band of metal teeth and a Scroll saw with a narrow blade.
Testing of electronic devices
The FabLab has set up comprehensive electronic test and measuring instruments including Oscilloscope, Function generator, etc. which are used in the development, testing, and repair of electronic products. The FabLab carries an inventory of a wide range of electronic components, both active and passive, to further reduce the time for rapid digital prototyping.
The FabLab also has specially trained personnel to provide its users with advisory, guidance, and handholding for effective and optimal use of the services housed under a single roof.The FabLab also facilitates access to best practices and use-cases of the Global FabLab network with a membership of over 1700 FabLabs across the world.The services offered are affordable with provision for advance booking of services of various equipment.The services and capabilities offered by the FabLab can be used in multiple combinations to achieve product design and prototyping goals.
